Location: France, Bordeaux

Winemaker: Alain Dupuy

Grapes: Cabernet Franc

Together with Lussac-Saint-Émilion and Montagne-Saint-Émilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion is one of the "satellites"of Saint-Émilion. It is truly rare today to discover vineyards that have literally never been subjected to any chemical pesticide or herbicide. This is especially, and heart-breakingly, so in Bordeaux. But stroll through the vineyards at Beauséjour and you will quickly see that there is a complete and harmonious ecosystem in place. In the spring, each year, there are fragile tulips growing among the vines, a clear sign that there is balance and life in the soils. And what soils! Part of the legendary reputation of the area’s wines is the marriage of a river delta over ancient limestone subsoils to the maritime climate of mid-coast Western France.

Learning from his grandfather, Gerard Dupuy (who learned from his grandfather Alain), today, is much less like the suit-and-tie Chateau patriarch and moreso a bonafide farmer of grapes. The estate’s classic cuveés are among the best value for first growths, but we love the quirky 100% Cabernet Franc for its freshness and depth. The vines for this wine are between 30-50 years old, and that affords it considerable structure without the use of oak. Raised in stainless steel and aged for over a year in the same, the aromas and fruits are preserved and focused. The wine is unfined and unfiltered; zero sulfites are added as well. Beauséjour’s are, like all the wines we love, testaments to the fact that careful farming, hand harvesting healthy fruit, and minimal processing in the cellar pay major dividends, even in stodgy Bordeaux.

This should be a winner for fans of classic Bordeaux as well as those who want “zero/zero” natural wines.
