Domaine de la Chevalerie ‘Peu Muleau’ Bourgueil Rouge 2014

$41.00
Only 1 available

Location: France, Loire, Bourgeuil

Winemaker: Laurie & Emmanuel Caslot

Grapes: Cabernet Franc

Soil: Cenozoic aeolian sands with iron clay and altered tuffeau

Winemaking: Maceration lasts less than 20 days, and aging is done in a mix of tank and large used barrels (with increasingly less oak because the siblings think too much oak masks clarity of flavor).

‘Peu-Muleau’: 2014 was not an easy vintage for Loire reds, but this is when the true talent of these dedicated vignerons shines through. A wet and humid summer meant the vines were particularly prone to mildew. Luckily a drier, windy September came that saved the vines, and the fruit managed to achieve a delicate balance between ripeness and acidity.

This is Chevalerie’s earliest drinking single-vineyard cuvée, and a great expression of Bourgueil. The nose explodes with raspberry and cherry blossom, coriander seeds and Sichuan pepper; ripe, salivating acidity drives the palate, with supple tannins and a lingering saltiness. Pair it with a beautiful pâté en croûte, duck rillette or a summer porcini risotto. A quick hour decant will help to encourage more red-fruited elegance and joy.-Lennie

From us at M&L: The Caslot family traces their roots back to the 1640s, and today thirteenth generation winegrowers Emmanuel and Laurie Caslot tend to the 33 organically/biodynamically farmed hectares around the village of Restigné and the hills of Benais. All the fruit is hand-harvested with careful sorting and destemming, short maceration time, and sulfur kept to a gentle minimum to avoid over-volatile acidity. ‘Peu Muleau’ is the first of their line of wines called ‘Cuvée Parcellaires’, which features different geological expressions of Cabernet Franc, the signature grape of Bourgueil.
