Domaine de la Chevalerie ‘Galichets’ Bourgueil Rouge 2014
Location: France, Loire, Bourgeuil
Winemaker: Laurie, Emmanuel & Stefanie Caslot
Grapes: Cabernet Franc
Soil: Gravel, silex, Sénonian clay, Turonian yellow tuffeau
Winemaking: Hand-harvested fruit goes into small crates to be twice-sorted and destemmed, then the whole grapes are fermented in vat before aging in vat/400-500L barrel for 8 months
‘Galichets’ is considered the most generous of the domaine’s cuvées, rich and broad in the mouth with deep bruised blackberry and violet, dark cocoa and teak; fine tannins but a powerful sleekness. Drink over two days to experience how the wine begins to unfurl with woodsier, muskier flavors—or cellar for the next five.
From us at M&L: ‘Galichets’ comes from a vineyard site planted to clay, alluvial sand and gravel topsoil, rich with silex. The vines are an average age 60 years old, with the oldest vines planted in the 1930s, though some have been replanted throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The plot is about 10 hectares, situated slightly lower than the ‘Chevalerie’ parcel with south-west exposure, yielding more broadness and riper, darker, more supple fruits. The Caslots always hand-harvest the grapes, carefully sort and de-stem, with short macerations (around 20 days) and gentle handling during fermentation. Aging is completed in tank or large used barrel, lasting anywhere from 4 to 10 months depending on the vintage.
