Domaine Truchetet ‘Les Chaillots’ Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne Rouge 2023
Winemaker: Morgan & Julie Truchetet
Grapes: Pinot Noir
It is in the heart of the hamlet of Premeaux-Prissey that Morgan and Julie Truchetet took over their family’s estate in January 2019, all centuries-old plots in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The estate covers 6.5 hectares of vineyards, all treated organically and with rigorous manual work throughout the year—diligent pruning, hand-trimmed leaf management, careful soil tillage, all plots plowed by horse, and zero use of pesticides. Morgan and Julie say that “you have to know how to listen to the vine and adapt each year.”
For the domaine’s red wines, depending on the years and appellation, the harvest is either 100% destemmed or partially de-stemmed. After a few days of cold maceration in vats (the Truchetet have stainless steel, enamel and concrete vat), the alcoholic fermentation is carried out traditionally with indigenous yeasts, with malolactic carried out in barrels. Aging takes place in barrels (25% new barrels) for 12 months. The wines are then racked and assembled en masse in vat (from 1 to 3 months) to then be bottled by the family.
‘Les Chaillots’: 100% Pinot Noir from a lieu-dit of the same name planted between 1955 and 1981 to clay and silty soils. Manually harvested with primary sorting in the vineyard and a second sorting at the domaine. All the fruit is destemmed; fermented spontaneously with the malolactic fermentation finished in barrels. Aged in barrel (25% new oak) for 12 months, then racked and blended in stainless steel tanks before bottling. Supremely pure with lush, velvety textures of bruised raspberry and wild strawberry, a hint of sweet clove and smoked paprika. Serve with glazed carrots, roasted bird, bouillabaisse. -Lennie
From the Importer Jeffrey Alpert Selections:
Morgan and Julie Truchetet, brother and sister, took over Domaine Truchetet from their father Jean-Pierre in January of 2019. Together, they represent the fifth generation to lead Domaine Truchetet. After receiving his BTS diploma in viticulture and oenology from the lycée viticole in Beaune, Morgan worked at Domaine Lescure in Nuits-Saint-Georges where he deepened his knowledge of organic farming, eventually rising to the position of vineyard manager, a role he assumed from 2012 to 2018. During this time, his younger sister Julie perfected her knowledge of terroirs while working for more than ten years at Domaine Truchetet, alongside Jean-Pierre, so it seems only natural that in 2019 they decided to join forces to take over the Domaine and begin a conversion to organic viticulture. They continue to explore new practices, such as innovative plant and seaweed treatments, reduced doses of sulphur and working by gravity in the winery. All the vineyards are horse ploughed. Their objective is to give energy back to the soil while bottling the fullest expression of each terroir. It’s an ambitious challenge, but one that Morgan and Julie are more than ready to take on!
