Domaine Étienne Simonis Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes 2023

$31.00

Location: France, Alsace

Winemaker: Étienne Simonis

Grapes: Sylvaner

Soil: myriad alluvial and colluvial

Winemaking: Slow, direct pressing followed by fermentation in neutral vessels. Wine is racked after several months and left on fine lees for several more. Bottled with no additions of so2 or any fining/filtering

From us at M&L: On his domaine’s website Etienne Simonis frankly states that he hopes his wines will leave no drinker “indifferent”. How could one shrug at a wine so nuanced that it borders the paradoxical. A broad swath from the “wine notes lexicon” is needed: fresh, crunchy, energetic, delicate, fruited - for sure - but also, smoke, spice, dashi-esque depth all lurk in a glass of wine that, in addition to being absolutely delicious, certainly makes an impression.

From the Importer Jeffrey Alpert Selections: Located in the small town of Ammerschwihr, in the Vosges foothills and the heart of the Alsace wine region, The Simonis family has been cultivating vines since the 17th century. The winery is run by Etienne Simonis, who took over the family's vineyard from her father René back in 1996. Etienne Simonis has collected 7 hectares of vineyards, which are primarily located at Ammerschwihr, but in addition he also has some vineyards at Bennwihr, Kaysersberg and Sigolsheim. Right from the start, Etienne has been very determined about how he would run the vineyard, so he started by converting production to organic farming, which has subsequently been supplemented with a biodynamic approach, both certified.
